Carbon Reduction Solutions - Innovative Solar Module & System Technologies

Introduction

Climate change have become a global issue. As countries begin to establish net-zero carbon reduction targets and policies such as CBAM (Established by the European Union), solar photovoltaics will play a more important role as it provides green energy, lowers energy usage and reduces carbon emissions.

Due to the rapid growth of solar photovoltaic new installation units, the impact of discarded modules upon the environment within the next 20 years will become a new global dilemma. IEA projects to reach 1632GW by year 2030 and 4512GW by year 2050. As the service life for solar cell modules is around 20~25 years, therefore it is expected that early estimated loss normal loss of discarded solar modules respectively will be around 8 million tons and 1.7 million tons by year 2030. By 2050, the number expect to reach 78 million tons and 60 million tons.

To resolve the challenges posed by discarded solar modules, Taiwan have constructed a new value creation module that was derived from the direction of raising recycling rate, lowering handling costs and environmentally friendly concept. Comparing the current solar photovoltaic modules that emphasizes on conversion efficiency, it is expected that the next generation of solar modules will focus more on high conversion efficiency goals and also other value added aspects such as weather and corrosion resistance, extension of product life, low carbonized goods which is high value recycling that is beneficial to the future of circular economy.
